Context of the project:
The aim of HARMONY is to provide and collate data about the status and the requirements of selected nutrients, particularly micronutrients, for specific vulnerable population groups identified by the proposers, in order to harmonize dietary recommendations Europe-wide. Existing epidemiological data from different population groups will be compared and harmonized, and new data will be provided in view of developing European dietary guidelines. As a result, consumer understanding will be improved and behavioral changes will be facilitated by communication to consumers, food chain operators, health professionals and policy makers. The participation of industry, new Member States and candidate countries is strongly encouraged, while the involvement of consumer organizations is essential.
The budget for HARMONY network of excellence in the proposal was 21380000 euros but the Commission proposes to spend maximum about 13 million.
The proposed joint programme of activities (JPA) consists of four main groups of activities:
Brief description of the SME:

Activity: Biotechnology consulting.
BIOTEMPO has two main areas of intervention: the Food and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Unit and the Environmental Biotechnology Unit. Besides technical consultancy and advanced training to other SMEs, BIOTEMPO has a strong R&D activity developing its own projects and others in consortia or contract research.
Previous involvement in European projects: BIOTEMPO has recently integrated two proposals for European funding but these are still under evaluation.
How did the SME get involved in the project?
BIOTEMPO registered itself in the SME for Food internet site more or less one year ago, and as a consequence receives periodically Partners Searches. One of those searches was the “II step HARMONY” which BIOTEMPO replied. After one day BIOTEMPO was contacted by the person in charge for the consortia of the NoE proposal and the possibilities of cooperation were discussed. BIOTEMPO integrated the NoE proposal that was successfully approved.
Role and activities of the SME in the project:
BIOTEMPO will participate in the integrating activity IA2 (SME Opportunities) through the identification of key SMEs that represent the issue of nutrition, the use of dietary guidelines by food, catering, food supplement and food marketing, health claim consulting. Additionally, BIOTEMPO will participate in the promotion of the HARMONY-informed food products development program through the website and through national organizations; conduct a survey of leading laboratories in the EC; and provide a list of opportunities for SMEs.
Moreover, BIOTEMPO will participate in the spreading of excellence SoE3 (Exploitation) through activities for policy and methodology to exploit its results and activities to stimulate product exploitation, including food product and associated marketing. Activities to stimulate product exploitation will include a continued and close liaison with HARMONY network to encourage identification and sharing of exploitation opportunities; set up a computer program on methods of dietary assessment linked to HARMONY methods; and set up a virtual laboratory and virtual training school.

Strategic expectations of the SME:
BIOTEMPO defined the functional food area as strategic for its development and has some ongoing projects on this subject. Therefore the participation on this network of excellence will allow BIOTEMPO to contact with the main role players on this emerging area of knowledge.
IPR for the SME:
Integrating many active participating parties needs a clear and coherent policy for the management of knowledge, intellectual property rights (IPR) and other innovations. Recognising the need for top-quality scientists to publish research results and the public source of its funds this NoE will make all results of its joint programme of activities available for publication. The management of knowledge, IPR and other innovations will be a constant point of attention. Work package Leaders are requested to file and report knowledge generated during the Network period funded by the Commission. The SC will report on the common use of pre-existing know how and generated knowledge.
